Sharon's Art
"Art is not ‘work‘ to me; it is part of me. Creating art gives me pure joy.
I hope others will find that my art brings pleasant thoughts and enjoyment to them."
Sharon Higgins
Sharon was born in Carrington, North Dakota, but she has lived most of her life amid the spectacular landscapes of New Mexico. She attended the University of New Mexico, where she studied Art. Sharon has come to appreciate the natural beauty of the scenery and people of the West and Southwestern United States, along with the superb and ever-changing lighting of the state she has come to love.
Sharon's creations have graced the covers of numerous editions of magazines, such as the Stockman Magazine, Arena News Magazine, Women Artist News -- New York, New Mexico Quarter Horse Magazine, Su Casa Homes Magazine, Lea Count Hall of Fame Calendar, and the covers of three published books. She has illustrated four published books and has created a cover for High Frontier for the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Her artwork has been reproduced as greeting and note cards. She has done stone hand pulled Lithographs, as well as Giclee prints, which are all widely collected.
Sharon has exhibited in numerous galleries, shows and exhibits, including the Museum of Santa Fe National Watercolor Show and the museum's national traveling art show. As a member of the National League of Pen Women of America, Sharon participated in their art shows and won several awards. She has won awards at New Mexico State Fair Art Shows (George Marks Award 1990), Will Barrett Award 2006, and several other ribbon awards and National Small Paintings shows. She has also exhibited in over 24 New Mexico Arts & Crafts shows at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds.
Although she is an artist who paints, Sharon is also a well-known muralist. She has created extensive murals (some very large) for many private homes, restaurants and businesses, as well as many extensive and sizable murals in area churches: Sandia Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, New Mexico State Fair murals, and the Ruidoso Visitor Center murals. She recently completed a large group of murals for St. John's Methodist Church.
Thoughts from Sharon's husband Terry
Being married to an artist for almost 61 years has been an interesting experience. I have seen Sharon grow artistically over the years. It has been intriguing to watch an artist emerge and evolve, and observe the dedication and hard work required to become such a successful artist. I was fortunate to have met and become the husband of such a fine artist, Sharon Pressnall Higgins. Sharon - like most successful artists - has been painting most of her life. I have always been her most ardent - and prejudiced - admirer. I have watched her grow and suffer through the ups and downs of being a serious artist.
Sharon has boundless enthusiasm and love for life and people. I believe she was born to paint, even destined to paint, and to live her life to the fullest. She paints with a passion and is pleased that her art is widely collected and added to art collections around the world. She considers that a bonus for something that she enjoys so much.
I marvel at Sharon's work ethic, tremendous patience and persistence in continuing with her art. I am continually amazed at the prodigious collection of work she has created (with small brushes, by the way) and the variety of subjects she has embraced. She never ceases to astonish me with her unceasing enthusiasm and the extent of paintings she has completed during her lifetime.
